Empower Yourself with Knowledge
If you are considering this sensitive surgery, you should feel absolutely confident in all aspects of the surgery.
What is Hymen Repair?
You will be placed under local sedation. The surgery normally takes less than one hour. In women who have a torn hymen, your surgeon, a hymen repair specialist, will stitch together the remaining pieces. This will allow the hymen to grow back together as it heals. In women who have no remnants of the hymen remaining or have been born without a hymen, the plastic surgeon will tighten the vaginal entrance and use a small portion of the vaginal tissue to create a new hymen. This constructed hymen is very similar to the natural hymen.
The Best Candidates for Hymen Repair
The best hymenoplasty candidates are those who need to ensure that their hymen is intact during intercourse on their matrimonial night. The surgery needs to be performed at least 6 weeks prior to the matrimonial night. If the breaking of your hymen is imperative for you due to social, cultural, religious or personal reasons, your plastic surgeon will discuss the surgery openly and honestly with you.
Many women find discussing the nature of this surgery to be difficult. At the Plastic Surgery Clinic we are aware of the sensitive nature of your concerns. This is why we treat all of our hymen repair patients with kindness, consideration and dignity. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with plastic surgery provider Dr. Lista or Dr. Ahmad.
We are also happy to ensure that a female nurse is present for you during your consultation if you wish. You will receive complete instructions on preparing for your surgery, and you will require a gynecological examination.
Recovery Following Hymen Repair
Following your plastic surgery procedure you will need to gently wash the area with soap and water regularly. There will be slight swelling and bruising for 2-4 weeks, but pain should be very minimal and should be gone within a week of surgery. You will receive a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics to assist with any pain and to prevent infection.
You should refrain from any vaginal insertion until the wedding night, including tampons. This will allow the incisions to heal completely and prevent the new hymen from breaking. You should also avoid heavy lifting and any strenuous activities as this may negatively affect your healing. The sutures will dissolve and come out on their own.
You should be able to return to work the day after undergoing hymen repair. You should be able to resume a light exercise routine one week after surgery. Avoid heavy lifting or a strenuous exercise routine for 4-6 weeks.
hymenoplasty side effects
- Intense itching
- Unusual or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Abnormal bleeding/spotting
- Pain during sex
- Painful menses due to the reduced vaginal opening
- Difficulty in future intercourse due to narrowed vaginal opening
- Numbness – At times, it continues for the days due to nerve injury during surgery
- Discoloration – temporary/permanent
- Discomfort upon sitting/walking where the inner skin tends to rub hard against the vaginal skin
- Increased bleeding with hematoma – some degree of bleeding is not a cause for worry. However, it will be a problem if the intensity of the bleeding increases. This is when hematoma arises. Untreated hematoma causes severe blood clots which might lead to embolism. If the hematoma is not treated much after the post-surgery, you may have to undergo a separate surgery.
Every operation has risks and potential complications. Fortunately, the vast majority of our Toronto and Mississauga hymenoplasty patients have no problems with their surgery and are extremely happy with their results.
Risks are rare but when they do occur additional medications or even surgery may be required. Such risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, pain with intercourse, and deformity. Also, the amount of bleeding upon first intercourse following surgery cannot be predicted. However, most patients never experience these risks, as they are quite rare.
At The Plastic Surgery clinic we understand the sensitivity and discretion with which to treat hymen repair. For many women this surgery may be necessary for various personal or religious reasons, but it is not usually covered by provincial health care plans and may seem out of their price range. Our priority is our patients’ well-being, and this includes relieving pre-surgery and financial stress.
